Roger Buter

Within The Scouting Company, my role encompasses that of Dutch live scout.

Experience:

With 37 years of experience in football, I have built a broad background within the game through a variety of roles and responsibilities.

Over the years, I have been involved in football as a board member, coordinator, youth and technical staff member, and youth coach. Since 2018, I have also focused intensively on player scouting, with a particular interest in talented players up to the age of 23.

What started as a personal passion and interest has developed into a serious and almost daily commitment. Over the years, I have developed my own approach to watching, analysing and reporting on players. I began sharing my scouting work and analysis through social media, which resulted in growing interest from people working within professional football.

My player analyses, discoveries and reports have led to various contacts, conversations and invitations to discuss my findings and vision within the professional game.

A significant moment came in 2024, when I was invited to Feyenoord for an extensive meeting with the club’s then Technical Director. Although the process did not continue due to circumstances at the time, it was an important confirmation for me that my approach to scouting was being taken seriously within professional football.

Since then, I have continued to focus on developing and professionalising my scouting work — not only in identifying interesting players, but particularly in improving the quality, depth and clarity of the analysis behind each report.

My approach to scouting

For me, good scouting starts with looking beyond statistics or simply listing a player’s strengths.

A player should be assessed as a complete footballer.

My aim is to provide a clear understanding of who a player really is on the pitch, what he brings to a team and what his potential may be at a higher level.

Among other aspects, I assess:

  • Physical qualities and physical capacity
  • Technical ability
  • Tactical understanding and speed of decision-making
  • Positional suitability and role within a team
  • Mental qualities
  • Personality and behaviour on the pitch
  • Areas for development and potential growth
  • The level, environment and context in which a player performs
  • The potential translation of his qualities to a higher level

For me, a scouting report should be more than a collection of observations. It should provide a clear, honest and well-founded assessment that a Technical Director, Head Scout, coach or other football professional can genuinely use as part of their decision-making process.

That is why three principles are central to my reports:

Open. Clear. Analytical.

I am not interested in making a player look better than he is.

When a player possesses interesting qualities, I want to explain clearly why those qualities matter. At the same time, doubts, risks and areas for development should be identified and supported by clear observations.

Independent perspective

One of my key strengths is my independent approach to player assessment.

I am not tied to a club, agent or commercial interest. This allows me to assess players from one central perspective:

What do I actually see on the pitch, and what does that tell me about the player’s potential development?

After many years of watching football and systematically following players over time, I believe that effective scouting goes beyond a single match or individual moment.

Assessing a player also means understanding his development, the environment in which he performs and which of his qualities are genuinely transferable to a higher level.

The Scouting Company

Through The Scouting Company, I aim to further professionalise this approach and make it available to clubs and football professionals looking for independent, in-depth and clearly presented player analysis.

My objective is simple: to provide an honest and detailed perspective on players and their potential — based on what I see, analyse and understand from the game.
